In the video, Tobias briefly explains the points we pay special attention to when designing headstones in collaboration with the families.

Further information has been carefully curated for you here.

How Do I Design a Grave? Important Factors to Consider

Designing a grave involves numerous factors that need consideration. First and foremost, the bereaved should carefully think about how much time is available for grave maintenance or whether they want to hire a cemetery gardener for this task.

If it is not guaranteed that the bereaved can regularly maintain the grave themselves, it is advisable to avoid high-maintenance planting in the grave design. To keep maintenance efforts to a minimum, using grave covers, which can be placed on the grave, is highly suitable. Alternatively, pebbles can be used to fill the area.

If regular grave maintenance is possible, elaborate grave designs are certainly an option. This often means the grave is filled with a garden bed and features numerous plants or flowers.

Planting and Designing Graves by Season

A grave can or must be designed differently depending on the season, as nearly every grave includes plants. As previously mentioned, these usually make up a significant part of the overall grave design. Even if the grave is equipped with a grave plate, it can be planted at certain spots or adorned with plants on the plate itself.

Grave Design in Spring

In spring, decorative and colorful early bloomers that can withstand frosty and cold nights are ideal. Especially in spring, we long for fresh colors.

For spring grave design, it is best to choose different early bloomers like primroses, daffodils, crocuses, or pansies - this way, you have various colors and shapes on the grave for many weeks.

Grave Design in Summer

In summer, it is advisable to choose plants or grasses that can thrive with minimal water. This helps prevent the plants from looking wilted or drying out on particularly hot days without frequent watering. Evergreen ground covers, sturdy ornamental grasses, and hardy begonias or coral bells are well-suited.

Grave Design in Autumn

For autumn, more subdued colors and plants that can handle the first cold nights are suitable. Asters, hostas, and silver baskets make a pleasing combination. Additionally, opt for ground covers. They somewhat protect other plants or flowers from the cold, and the more ground they cover, the easier the grave will be to maintain overall.

Grave Design in Winter

In winter, there is undoubtedly the least you can do in terms of design. Hardy ground covers are suitable. You can continue to use the ground-covering plants that you planted in the autumn.

Additionally, arrangements made from dried branches, dried flowers, or holly are suitable for decoration in winter.

How to Create a Low-Maintenance Grave Design?

For an easy-to-maintain grave design, you need the right plants. This means you should choose plants that require little water in the summer and ideally bloom throughout the year.

How to Design Graves Seasonally

A grave can or must be decorated differently depending on the season, as almost every grave contains plants. These usually make up a significant part of the overall grave decoration, as previously mentioned. More tips are available in the article.

Modern Cemetery Design

The central element of a grave is the headstone. The grave is usually surrounded by a border that defines its 'boundaries'. Modern and maintenance-intensive grave design is characterized primarily by a variety of blooming plants and symmetry. It is often complemented with grave decorations (see above) and stepping stones made of gravel or stone.

The grave is the final resting place of the deceased and serves as a place of quiet for all surviving relatives, a place where they can process their grief and always return to remember the loved one. Therefore, the grave design should be chosen in such a way that the grave always makes a neat and well-kept impression.

The design starts with choosing the right headstone and ends with the appropriate planting. There are numerous options available to you for the design of the grave. We would like to explain some important points about grave design in this article.

Grave Design and Maintenance Go Hand in Hand

You can find the best tips for grave maintenance here

You should ensure that the grave plants are long-lasting to avoid frequent replanting. If you want the grave to always be in bloom, it is advisable to resort to seasonal planting. However, make sure this fits with the permanent planting.

Typically, plants are replaced in spring, summer, and fall.

Low-Maintenance Grave Design

For a low-maintenance grave design, you need the right plants. This means you should choose plants that require little water in the summer and ideally bloom all year round.

It is best to use ground covers (e.g., wintergreen) for planting. These are low-maintenance and can already cover a large area of the grave. However, leave enough space for seasonal replanting. Besides ground covers, plants like geraniums, fuchsias, or daisies, which do not need regular watering, are also recommended.

In addition to planting, which already makes up a large part of the grave design, elements like stones with words, sayings, or grave figurines are a great choice.

Low-maintenance grave design can also be achieved by filling the grave with gravel instead of soil or placing a grave cover on it. Flat stones or boulders are also excellent options. This saves considerable effort in grave maintenance and eliminates the need for regular upkeep.

What is Allowed in Grave Design?

Fundamentally, the bereaved should always consider the wishes of the deceased when designing the grave, for instance, by choosing the favorite plants of the deceased. In most cases, however, the relatives alone decide on the grave design. This also applies when considering: What is allowed and what is not?

Nevertheless, there are certain regulations that specifically concern grave design in the cemetery. It is important to ensure that the design of the grave fits into the general appearance of the cemetery and is respectful to all other visitors. Overly elaborate or colorful headstones could lead to issues down the line.

The question of what is allowed cannot be answered uniformly, as each cemetery regulation is different. Therefore, before engaging in grave design, it is worthwhile to visit the cemetery's gardening service. Here, you can get detailed information on the design of the grave.

How Much Does Professional Grave Design Cost?

If you or the bereaved do not wish to take care of the grave design yourself, it is possible to hire the cemetery’s gardening service. For the initial setup of the grave site, a one-time cost of between 250 Euros and 500 Euros is typical. The exact cost always depends on the individual wishes of the bereaved.

In addition to the initial setup, the cemetery gardening service can also be hired for ongoing grave maintenance and design. The monthly costs for this service can range from 250 Euros to 1,500 Euros.

Conclusion

Grave design is an incredibly important aspect when it comes to the resting place of a loved and deceased person. The grave serves as the final resting place and, for the bereaved, as a place for mourning and remembrance.

Therefore, the design of the grave should be carefully considered. The time required for maintenance is also an essential factor. In most cases, the bereaved do not live in the same location or cannot find the time to regularly care for the grave. In such cases, a simple grave design is always a good choice.
