Headstone for Single Grave

In addition to regular tombstones, you have the option to choose a headstone for a single grave. Depending on how much time you have for maintaining a grave and how well it matches the deceased's wishes, the headstone can be an ideal choice for you.

What is a Grave Plate?

Just like a regular headstone, a grave plate also serves for the marking and decoration of the grave. While the headstone is traditionally placed upright at the head of the grave, the grave plate lies flat or slightly angled on the surface of the grave. Grave plates can replace the headstone or be used as an additional decorative element alongside the headstone. The size of the grave plate depends on the size of the grave.

Grave Plates for Single Graves

Grave plates are suitable for all types of graves, be it an urn grave, a single grave, or a double grave. The grave plate does not need to cover the entire surface of the grave; it can be part of the overall grave decoration, blending with the planting to create a cohesive design. For particularly personalized single graves, grave plates or so-called pillow stones in unique shapes are recommended, such as a book, angel, leaf, heart or star. Which Material is Suitable for Grave Slabs?

For grave slabs, the same types of stone used for headstones can be used. If there is already a headstone in place, it makes sense to craft the slab from the same material as the headstone. The most commonly used materials for grave slabs are usually granite, sandstone, or limestone.

Grave Slabs Made of Granite

Granite is one of the hardest and most durable types of stone. Despite its robust nature, granite is excellent for design and customization according to your wishes. Due to its numerous design possibilities and timeless appearance, granite remains one of the most popular stones in art and craftsmanship. It is weather-resistant, frost-proof, and low-maintenance. With its high-quality characteristics, granite can be crafted into unique and lasting expressions of our connection.

Grave Slabs Made of Sandstone

Sandstone formed over 150 million years ago from the deposition of weathered stones and sand grains. Over time, it hardened into one of the most popular and enduring natural stones in the world, known for its majestic presence in historic buildings since the early Middle Ages. In its warm coloring, sandstone emits a sense of warmth and comfort even on cold days. On sunny days, the rays of the sun reveal a gentle sparkle and twinkle within the stone.

Limestone Grave Slabs

Due to its elegant appearance, limestone was favored as a building material even during Roman times and is also found in numerous medieval structures. Limestone has a high density, but as a soft sedimentary rock, it is excellent for surface design. Elements such as angels or wings are particularly striking on limestone grave slabs, with the warm base tone giving the stones an elegant and serene appearance.

How can grave slabs be inscribed?

Grave and lying slabs are typically inscribed with the names and dates of the deceased. Originally, inscriptions were chiseled into the stone. At Messerschmidt Gravestones, however, we utilize a modern method. The text is engraved into the stone using a blasting technique for a gentler approach. To achieve a precise finish, the engraved text is subsequently painted rather than hand-colored. We prioritize modern and contemporary techniques to serve your best interests.

Common Gravestone Sizes

What size of gravestone should I choose?

The size of the gravestone you choose depends on several factors. Most cemeteries have clear regulations outlined in their bylaws. You must adhere to the dimensions or minimum sizes specified. These will be communicated to you when purchasing a grave plot.

The size of the gravestone should also harmonize with an existing headstone if there is one. Both should complement each other.

Finally, your personal preference should also play a role in the final decision.

When can a gravestone be installed?

The gravestone can be installed at the same time as the headstone. Depending on the cemetery and its regulations, this could be several months to a year after the burial. This extended period helps to ensure the gravestone does not settle with the earth.

How much does a gravestone for a single grave cost?

Simple, basic gravestones for single graves range from 500 to 1200 euros. Depending on your personal preferences and additional features such as ornaments, angels, or glass elements, the cost could go up to 2000 euros or more.
